Oil Pump almost dead?
Hello Everyone,
When I have my bathtub parked more than 2 weeks, the pump doesn't pump oil like it should. Sometimes I hear at first seconds the motor rolling without oil at crankshafts and so on...
At this point, i will need for sure to open and change the crankshaft bearing again, but before it, I need to solve this problem! It seems that oil leak from oil pump when it is stopped, and when I start it the oil pump starts working without oil inside.
I think that oil pump was gone, anyone had the same problem?
Thanks,
Nuno

Hi Nuno,
Sometimes I've had also the feeling by my bathtub, like you. The voice of the engine is anotherone by starting, than by driving a longer time with it. I've taken away the oil snorkel, where you fill in the oil. Even the enginge is running, you see, if the rocker arms are doused with oil.
I hope, you've the right oil? Mineral oil 20/50! No syntetic oil!!!!
That's why I never take the full force in the beginning of start.
Never I've heard, that this pump is broken or destroyed. But I don't know really, how this pump works.
By my engine, the tube, which is bringing up the oil to the rocker arms, was not engaged.
Yours sincerely,
Wolle

Exactly, Nuno! You can see, if the oil is comming up!
It may be also, that this small oil pipe is clogged or not locked.

Wolle

Hi,
the oil-pump is a simple gear-pump as in most engines. here is a schematic picture of the oil-flow in the P3-engine:
and here you can read/see the basics of a gear-pump:
www.kfz-tech.de/Zahnradpumpe.htm
as it is a simple design, there must be very heavy wear applied to make that kind of pump fail. but nothing is impossible; either the pump does have leakage at the housing (sides of the gears) or -if there is a non-return valve installed, which i do not know for the P3- the valve may be faulty.
adding a good MoS2 additive to the motor oil might be a good idea to reduce wear and tear on the engine after cold-starts or longer running intervals...
regards
klaus

Hello everyone and thanks for you answers.
I think that the fault is somewhere at the oil pump, because after a "could start", the light of oil pressure only goes out 2-3 seconds after the car starts. Normally, to shorten this time, I take the oil filter out, and put some oil directly at the pump oil (green arrow).
It seems that oil flows out of the pump if the car be parked for some weeks.
I'm using a Castrol Monograduate oil SAE 30.
Thanks,
Nuno
